The IFF Central Board (CB) has today, based on the request from the Swiss Floorball Association, decided to cancel the IFF Floorball Champions Cup (CC) 2022, which was planned to be played in Winterthur, Switzerland, from the 15th to 16th of January 2022. Due to the latest development of the Covid-19 pandemic with the new Omicron variant, the Swiss Floorball Associations does not find it possible to organise the event.
The Swiss Floorball Association stated in their letter to the IFF CB that the intensified measures of the Federal Council in Switzerland as of 6th of December makes it impossible to prepare the event and travels for the participating teams:
– In Switzerland as well as in the participating countries, the Covid-19 pandemic is still very dynamic and changing rapidly. The internationality of the event and the associated dependence on other countries and their Covid-19 policies increases the planning difficulties and therefore the Swiss Floorball Association requested to cancel the Champions Cup, said Sophie Sutter, Head of IFF Champions Cup 2022 at Swiss Floorball.
The IFF CB finds it very unfortunate that the Champions Cup is again cancelled, but fully understands the current difficulties of planning international events:
– The IFF Central Board members understood the difficult situation that the local organisers are dealing with currently when new restrictions are put in place by the governments. In addition to taking care of the safety and well-being of all players and officials it is also our duty to take the situation of our local organisers into account. Hence with all uncertainty with the Omicron variant, it leaves us with the only option to cancel the CC 2022, said IFF President Tomas Eriksson.
The CC 2022 was planned to be played at the AXA Arena in Winterthur with the best teams from the top floorball countries:
Women: Thorengruppen IBK (SWE), PSS (FIN), Kloten-Dietlikon Jets (SUI), 1.SC TEMPISH Vítkovice (CZE)
Men: Classic (FIN), IBF Falun (SWE), Floorball Köniz (SUI), Florbal MB (CZE)
